SHEILA CHERFILUS
Executive Biography
Sheila Cherfilus was named Chief Executive Officer and Corporate Counsel of Trinity Health Care Services, Inc. in 2010. She launched her career with this organization as an intern 1999, which led to several promotions and achievements. This experience ultimately led her to pursue a Juris Doctor in 2007. Due to her passion for advancing the health care industry, she is committed to becoming an expert in the rapidly-evolving Health Care Reform Bill. Ms. Cherfilus resolved to gain the knowledge necessary to drive positive change through executive health care leadership and by lobbying for reimbursement reform on Capitol Hill.
Ms. Cherfilus was recruited to return to Trinity in 2010 following a brief separation from the company to complete her education. Armed with exceptional legal and executive management skills, she served as General Counsel for a short term to address a specific challenge, and then was quickly charged with restructuring the entire organization as CEO. She currently directs the VP of Operations, Policies & Operations Coordinator, and two Directors of Nursing. She also oversees a team of more than 270, and is accountable for fiscally-responsible administration of budgets and finances. She uses her business management acumen to lead all operational areas.
As a visionary thought leader, she was able to rapidly assess the potential liabilities and efficiency limitations, which enabled her to establish a viable plan for change. She began with conducting an audit for the nursing and billing functions—resulting in the implementation of an Internal Controls Division. She utilized her understanding of how to leverage data and metrics to streamline operations and institute compliance-focused procedures. During her tenure with Trinity, she has ensured all plans pointed to one primary outcome: superior patient care. She recognizes that to achieve this goal, she must use her legal background to establish a foundation where necessary services are provided and adequate staffing is in place.
Ms. Cherfilus is a strong advocate of using technology to drive improvements in health care. She also views it as a way to reduce costs and eliminate potential errors. In 2010, she hired an IT consultant to implement Cloud Computing, which saved $50K annually. In addition, she required the use of emerging technology, such as computer tablets for real-time documenting. By uncovering methods for combining the nursing function with administrative duties, she was able to drastically cut costs. Through strong leadership and guidance, she restructured the entire staff to elevate team members that understood technology and excelled in an environment where accountability was the key to advancement. Her forward-thinking initiatives boosted morale, efficiency, accuracy, compliance, and revenue.
From 2005 to 2007, she served in the role of Vice President of Operations. During this time, she managed two locations while directing companywide Nursing and Billing departments. She recognized the need for expanding Trinity’s visibility in the community, both with patients and medical professionals. By working with a website design consultant, she improved the company’s reach by establishing an internet presence and designing an interactive website dashboard. She also reduced costs by instituting the Fast Track database. Ms. Cherfilus moved from serving as an Intern from 1999 to 2001 into the role of Operations Manager from 2002 to 2005. This exceptional experience offered her the opportunity to hone her management skills by using creative problem solving, project management, and team supervision skills. It was at this point in her career that she recognized her ability to develop and execute new and exciting improvements that made a true impact across the company.
An alumnus of St. Thomas University School of Law, she graduated with a Juris Doctor in 2010. From 2005 to 2007, Ms. Cherfilus completed extensive coursework toward an MBA from the University of Maryland University College. Prior to that time, she attended Howard University where she obtained a Bachelor of Science in 2001. While attending the School of Law, she was the Quarter Finalist in the Federal Bar Association Moot Court Competition, a competitor in the National Criminal Procedure Tournament hosted by University of San Diego School of Law, and was recognized as Best Oralist at the St. Thomas University School of Law Moot Court Competition. She also served as a Legal Intern for three law offices from 2007 to 2010.
